Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is a medieval mountain fortress perched on a rocky spur at about 757 m in the Vosges range of Alsace, commanding sweeping views over the Upper Rhine plain that made it a strategic stronghold from the 12th century. Left in ruins after the Thirty Years' War, it was comprehensively rebuilt in 1900–1908 for German Emperor Wilhelm II by architect Bodo Ebhardt, and it later served as the backdrop for Jean Renoir's cinematic masterpiece La Grande Illusion (1937). SafetyThe visitor route includes about 300 steps of varying heights and the stone surfaces get slippery when wet. Wear flat, non-slip shoes.
SeasonAt 757 m it is cooler, windier and foggier than the plain; bring a layer even in summer and expect that overcast days can hide the view.
SeasonIn winter (Nov–Mar) hours are shorter with a midday closure (12:00–13:00), and the seasonal shuttle (line 500) from Sélestat mainly runs on spring–autumn weekends and holidays, so a car is effectively needed off-season.
RulesStrollers/pushchairs are not allowed inside (baby carriers recommended). Last admission is about one hour before closing, and the castle is closed on 1 January and 25–26 December.
