🇲🇻 Hanifaru Bay

Location

Overview

Hanifaru Bay is a small bay in the core zone of the UNESCO Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, widely regarded as the world's premier manta ray feeding site. On incoming tides the keyhole-shaped reef funnels plankton toward the surface at the back of the bay, triggering the famous 'cyclone feeding' in which dozens of mantas — sometimes more than 100 — spiral open-mouthed in formation, and whale sharks occasionally join in. Depths are shallow at roughly 1–8m with visibility around 10–25m, though dense plankton can cloud the water. As of 2026 the bay remains a snorkel-only, no-diving zone, making it ideal to enjoy from the surface, but manta sightings depend heavily on season and tides.

Practical info

Reach the bay by a roughly 20-minute domestic flight from Malé (Velana International) to Dharavandhoo, then a short boat transfer, with Baa Atoll resorts and Dharavandhoo guesthouses running manta excursions in season. An entry permit and accredited guide are required and daily numbers are limited, so book ahead and confirm current fees, timing and operating status before you go.
