Hanauma Bay is a crescent-shaped bay on Oʻahu's southeast coast, formed inside a collapsed volcanic crater, and it is Hawaiʻi's most famous beginner snorkeling spot. SafetyThe inner reef is shallow, but currents and rip currents strengthen near the outer channel (by the telephone cables) and at low tide. Stay within the marked snorkeling zone and do not swim out past the reef toward open water.
SafetyDespite how calm it looks, this is one of Hawaiʻi's more frequent snorkeling-incident sites. Never snorkel alone; if your mask fogs or you feel short of breath or panicked, lift your face and rest. Weak swimmers and beginners should wear a flotation vest or use a float, and lifeguards are on duty.
RulesA 9-minute preserve orientation video is mandatory before entry, and standing on, touching, or walking on coral and rocks is prohibited. Sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate are banned in Hawaiʻi, so bring only reef-safe products.
MannersDo not feed or touch turtles (honu) or fish. Keep your fins off the coral, maintain buoyancy so you don't kick the reef, and give wildlife a wide berth.
SeasonSnorkeling is possible year-round, but calm summer months (roughly April to September) offer the best visibility and safety. Winter brings larger swells and murkier water on many days.
