Haemieupseong is one of Korea's best-preserved Joseon-era walled towns, built between 1417 and 1421 in Seosan to defend the west coast against Japanese pirates; its roughly 1.8 km stone rampart and three gate towers survive largely intact, and it is designated Historic Site No. 116. Inside, restored government halls (dongheon, gaeksa), a jail, folk houses, and broad lawns make it pleasant for walking and history. It is also a solemn Catholic martyrdom site from the 1866 Byeongin Persecution, recognized by the Vatican as an international pilgrimage destination in 2021.

SeasonThe rampart top and open lawns offer little shade; bring a hat, sunscreen, and water in summer, and dress warmly against strong winds in winter.
MannersThe scholar tree, execution stone, and martyrs' shrine are sacred to Catholic pilgrims. Keep quiet, and do not touch or lean on the memorial relics.
RulesThe walls and gate towers are old stone-and-timber heritage. Climb only on marked paths and avoid graffiti, damage, or entering restricted areas.
SafetySections of the rampart walk have no railings and uneven stone footing that is easy to trip on. Wear sneakers rather than heels and watch your step.
