Gyeongnidan-gil is a hilly street in the Itaewon area of Seoul's Yongsan District, running from near Noksapyeong Station toward Namsan. Its official road name is Hoenamu-ro, but it is far better known as "Gyeongnidan-gil," a nickname from the entrance of the former ROK Army Central Finance Corps (Gyeongnidan) where it begins. In the 2010s it became one of Seoul's trendiest strips, packed with international restaurants, quirky cafes and rooftop bars.
A multicultural food street with Italian, Mexican, Thai (e.g. Saladang Embassy) and Korean-fusion eateries
Hidden indie cafes, craft-beer brewery outposts, and murals tucked into narrow alleys
Rooftop cafes and bars with sweeping views over central Seoul at night
Strolling the uphill Hoenamu-ro backstreets past boutiques and small design shops
Easy pairing with Noksapyeong Station (a design landmark) and nearby Namsan / N Seoul Tower
Good to know
SeasonOn peak nights like Halloween and year-end, the broader Itaewon area draws huge crowds—especially the sub-4m sloping alley near Itaewon Station and the Hamilton Hotel. After the 2022 crowd crush, police tighten crowd control; avoid packed, narrow downhill alleys and follow marshals.
SafetyGyeongnidan-gil itself is a steep uphill climb with narrow lanes. Wear comfortable flat shoes and take extra care on the slopes and steps when heading downhill at night after drinking.
RulesPrices, opening hours and closing days vary by venue and change often (e.g. cafes closed Mondays, break time 3–5pm). Check each shop's latest details before you go.
MannersResidential homes are mixed into the alleys. Keep noise down late at night, avoid rowdy street drinking, and don't photograph private residences.
CautionSome Itaewon clubs and bars may push aggressive touting or unclear charges (cover/seating fees, forced tips). Confirm the price before ordering.
