🇵🇹 Guimarães Castle & Palace of the Dukes of Braganza

Castelo de Guimarães & Paço dos Duques de Bragança · 기마랑이스

Location

Overview

In the UNESCO-listed city of Guimarães in northern Portugal, this medieval castle and ducal palace mark the spot known as the birthplace of the nation (Aqui Nasceu Portugal). Guimarães Castle, with its granite walls and seven towers, is traditionally cited as the birthplace of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, while the nearby 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza stands out for its Gothic–Burgundian style and conical brick chimneys. The castle, palace and São Miguel chapel sit within a few minutes' walk of one another.
