Perched on a rocky spur in the La Gruyère region of canton Fribourg, this car-free medieval town lines a cobbled main street with houses from the 13th to 17th centuries and gives its name to Gruyère cheese. Crowning the hill, the 13th-century castle was the seat of the Counts of Gruyère for nearly 500 years and is now a cantonal museum showing medieval stained glass, Ancien Régime frescoes, paintings by Corot, and the 19th-century 'troubadour' decor of the Knights' Hall left by a colony of artists. In 2026 a single ticket still covers the castle, its garden and temporary exhibitions, and the same tiny town also holds the H.R. Giger Museum (designer of the film 'Alien') and a Tibet Museum — an easy half- to full-day trip.

SafetyThe climb from the station is an uphill cobbled path that gets slippery when wet, so wear comfortable shoes and allow about 20 minutes on foot.
SeasonJuly is peak season and midday is crowded, so go early; from November to March the castle closes earlier (10am–5pm), so check the seasonal hours.
RulesThe old town is a pedestrian zone closed to cars — park in the lots at the base and walk up, or better still come by train or bus.
MannersPhotography is not allowed inside the H.R. Giger Museum, and quiet and photo rules should be respected at the Tibet Museum and other exhibitions.
