Overview
Lighthouse Point sits at the northwest tip of Grand Cayman in West Bay, directly in front of the Divetech dive centre, and is entered on foot from shore. Swim out roughly 300 feet (90m) and the mini wall begins at 35β70 feet (11β21m); another 300 feet west, the main wall tops out around 40 feet and drops away into deep canyons. That combination β a walk-in site where you can hang a deep line, with 25β40m visibility and 26β30Β°C water β is why Performance Freediving International has staged its Deja Blue competition here repeatedly since 2004. As of July 2026 shore freediving in front of Divetech is still offered at no charge, but a buddy is non-negotiable, and whether a recent edition of Deja Blue is running should be confirmed with the organisers directly.
The mini wall β about 300 feet off the beach in 11β21m of water. Gentle enough to use as a warm-up and equalisation training ground before anything deeper.
The main wall drop-off β another 300 feet west, cresting near 12m before canyons fall away into the deep. This is where depth lines get set.
The Guardian of the Reef β a bronze mermaid roughly 5m tall including its pedestal, standing on sand at 18β20m with its head about 40 feet (12m) below the surface, which puts it comfortably in freediving range.
Visibility of 25β40m on a sheltered west-facing coast. Outside the winter nor'wester season the surface often goes glassy.
Deja Blue β a two-week training camp followed by a competition week, running depth disciplines (CWT, FIM, CNF) alongside pool events. Deja Blue 9 alone produced six national records and a white-card 100m CWT dive by a female athlete.
Good to know
SafetySolo freediving is forbidden. Divetech states plainly that a freediving buddy is required at all times on the house reef, and if you arrive alone you hire one. There is no 'it's shallow, I'll be fine' exception here.
SafetyShallow water blackout and LMC cluster in the last 10m of the ascent and in the first seconds on the surface, not at depth. Your buddy meets you on the ascent and keeps hands and eyes on you for at least 30 seconds after you surface. People have died on dives no deeper than the mini wall.
SafetyDepth lines on the main wall belong to a proper setup only: buoy, lanyard, counterballast and trained safety divers. Lanyards have their own documented failure modes β snagging and jamming on the line β so wearing one is not a guarantee, and beyond the wall there is no bottom to stop you. Do not run unsupervised, unlined deep dives.
SafetyHours of repetitive dives past 20m on short surface intervals can give a breath-hold diver decompression sickness (taravana). Vertigo, weakness, slurred speech or visual disturbance means stop and treat it as an emergency. A recompression chamber is reported to operate on 24-hour call at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital in George Town, but verify the current contact and status before you travel, and carry insurance that explicitly covers freediving.
SeasonApril to June is the sweet spot. In winter a nor'wester will blow out the entire west coast including Lighthouse Point, making entry genuinely hazardous rather than merely choppy. Check the day's forecast and defer to the dive centre's call.
RulesMarine parks cover close to half of Grand Cayman's waters. Taking or damaging marine life is illegal and touching coral is off-limits. Boats transit this stretch, so no line session or long swim out without a surface float.
CautionBe wary of freelance 'deep diving guides' who approach you outside an established centre; some operate without safety divers, oxygen or insurance. Ask to see credentials and cover, and since Cayman is among the most expensive destinations in the Caribbean, get course, buddy and boat fees confirmed in writing before you get in the water.
Practical info
Fly into Owen Roberts International (GCM) β about an hour from Miami β and it is roughly a 30-minute drive by rental car or taxi out to Lighthouse Point in West Bay. April to June lines up the best conditions with the competition season; deep line sessions and courses are booked ahead and subject to a check of your certification and experience, so confirm current pricing, opening hours and any Deja Blue dates directly with Divetech and the organisers.
