🇹🇷 Göreme Open-Air Museum

Göreme Açık Hava Müzesi · 카파도키아 괴레메

Location

Overview

The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a cluster of Byzantine-era rock-cut churches and a monastic community carved into the soft volcanic tuff of Cappadocia. It is renowned for the vivid frescoes preserved inside churches dating mostly from the 10th to 12th centuries, and it forms part of 'Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia,' inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. In 2026 it remains one of Cappadocia's most visited sites, open year-round and easily paired with the region's hot-air-balloon and fairy-chimney sightseeing for a day out.

Practical info

The museum lies about 1 km from central Göreme — a gentle 15–20 minute uphill walk, or a short dolmuş (minibus) or taxi ride. The nearest airports are Nevşehir Cappadocia (NAV) and Kayseri (ASR). It opens daily, roughly 08:00–19:00 in summer and 08:00–17:00 in winter, with the ticket office closing before the gate, so arrive with time to spare. Always confirm current fees, hours and any night-museum openings on the official website before you go.
