Gordes is one of France's iconic hilltop villages (village perché), its pale stone houses stacked up a cliff in the Monts de Vaucluse facing the Luberon in Provence. It is classed among 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' and was named the world's most beautiful village by Travel + Leisure in 2023. The main draws are the village itself (its Renaissance château and maze of cobbled 'calades'), the nearby Sénanque Abbey with its lavender fields, and the dry-stone Village des Bories. As of 2026 the village and its main sites are open as usual, with the La Roque d'Anthéron International Piano Festival stopping in Gordes on 26–27 June 2026; note, however, that Sénanque's lavender is usually harvested around 15–20 July, so by mid-to-late July the fields may already be cut — aim for late June to early July if lavender is your goal, and book parking, restaurants and hotels ahead in peak season.

SeasonSénanque's lavender blooms from mid-June to mid-July, peaks roughly late June to about 10 July, and is harvested around 15–20 July. If you arrive after mid-July the fields may already be cut, so check bloom status before your trip.
SeasonIn the summer high season the narrow lanes and small car parks get very crowded and fill up fast. Arrive early in the morning and reserve restaurants and hotels well in advance.
RulesSénanque is still a working monastery. Silence is mandatory inside and a dress code applies (knees and shoulders must be covered); booking tickets online via the official site senanque.fr is recommended.
RulesEntering the lavender fields is forbidden to protect the monks' harvest — do not walk in for photos. Drone flights are also strictly banned over the valley and the abbey.
MannersInside the abbey and during services, keep quiet and refrain from photography (no photos, video or sound recording during services); pets are not allowed.
SafetyThe roads to Gordes and around the viewpoint are narrow and winding. Many cars stop abruptly on the verge for the classic photo, so park only in designated spots and watch for passing traffic on foot.
CautionLavender and Provençal souvenirs range from genuine essential oils to cheap fragranced products — check the ingredient labels, and book Sénanque only through the official site (senanque.fr) to avoid unofficial resold tickets.
Practical info
Gordes has no train station, so a car (or taxi/tour) is effectively essential; the nearest major stations are Avignon TGV / Avignon Centre, about a 50-minute drive (taxi/VTC roughly 45 minutes), with no direct bus and connections required. Parking is limited in high season, so arrive early, and check the official websites for the Château, the Village des Bories and Sénanque Abbey for current opening hours and ticket prices before you go, as these can change.
