Gongsanseong Fortress served as the royal fortress of the Baekje kingdom during its Ungjin period (475-538 CE), when the capital was located in present-day Gongju. Its roughly 2,660 m wall runs along a low ridge on the south bank of the Geumgang River, and it is one of the sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as part of the Baekje Historic Areas.

Good to know
SafetyParts of the wall path drop off as a cliff on one side and include steep slopes and stairs. Wear comfortable non-slip shoes and take extra care along sections without railings.
SafetyCompleting the full wall loop with a stroller or wheelchair is difficult due to slopes and steps. With elderly or less mobile companions, plan flatter sections rather than the whole circuit.
SeasonThere is little shade, so summer midday visits carry a real heat and dehydration risk. Bring a hat and water; the guard-changing ceremony is suspended during peak heat (roughly the second week of June to the end of August).
SeasonStone and dirt paths get slippery in rain, snow or winter icing. Winter closing is early (typically 17:00), so allow ample time for late-afternoon visits.
RulesAs a UNESCO site and a state-designated Historic Site, avoid damaging or writing on the walls and structures, and eating or smoking outside designated areas; stay on the marked routes.

Opening hours are approximately 09:00-18:00 in the warm season (Mar-Oct) and 09:00-17:00 in winter (Nov-Feb), with last admission 30 minutes before closing; closed on Lunar New Year, Chuseok and New Year's Day.
