The Golden Gate Bridge, opened in 1937, is San Francisco's iconic suspension bridge, world-famous for its 'International Orange' color and Art Deco towers rising through the fog. When completed it had the longest main span of any suspension bridge in the world (about 1,280 m / 4,200 ft), and it still spans the Golden Gate strait where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific. As of 2026 a stainless-steel suicide-deterrent net, completed in early 2024, runs the full length of the span and has sharply reduced deaths. Walking and biking across are free, and the bridge is a must-see whether you take it in from the deck, a bike, or one of the classic overlooks.

SeasonEven in summer (July–August) fog and a cold sea wind make it feel chilly and often overcast. Bring a windproof jacket and layers; for clear views, aim for early morning or late afternoon when the fog tends to lift.
SafetySmash-and-grab car break-ins are common at the scenic parking lots (Battery Spencer, Vista Point). Never leave bags, cameras or passports in a rental car—take them with you even for a short stop.
RulesPedestrians may use the east sidewalk only; hours are roughly 5:00–21:00 in summer and 5:00–18:30 in winter and shift seasonally, so check the latest. Drones, e-scooters and skateboards are banned, and walking or biking across is free.
MannersThe sidewalk is narrow and shared with cyclists—keep to the right, don't block the path for photos, yield to bikes, and keep the flow moving near the towers.
RulesVehicle tolls are charged southbound only (toward San Francisco) and are cashless—paid via FasTrak or license-plate billing. Rates are adjusted yearly, so confirm the latest.
CautionFor rental cars the toll is billed by plate and agencies may add service fees—check how yours handles it before returning. Watch for pushy, overpriced 'tours' around tourist spots like Fisherman's Wharf, and note that tipping is expected for tours and rideshares.
Practical info
From the city, Muni bus 28 stops right at the Welcome Center on the south end, and the free Presidio GO shuttle also serves the area. The Welcome Center is open daily 09:00–18:00 (free, no admission fee), and walking or biking across is free. Vehicle tolls, sidewalk hours and shuttle schedules change, so check the latest before you go.
