Overview
The Royal Palace of Gödöllő (Grassalkovich Castle), about 30 km northeast of Budapest, is Hungary's largest Baroque palace, begun in the 1730s by Count Antal Grassalkovich I. After the 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise it was presented as a coronation gift to Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth ('Sisi'), and it is best known as the beloved Hungarian retreat of Sisi, who spent much of her time here. In 2026 a major nine-year restoration (about HUF 40 billion) began to return the palace to its 19th-century, Elisabeth-era splendour, so some areas are under works, but the restored royal suites and park remain open. It makes an easy half-day trip for travellers who want both Habsburg elegance and a window onto Hungary's turbulent 20th century.

CautionThe HÉV suburban train (H8) and the Örs vezér tere interchange in Budapest get crowded — watch for pickpockets, wear bags in front and keep your wallet and passport in an inside pocket.
RulesThe H8 crosses the Budapest city boundary, so a Budapest travel pass alone is not enough; buy the extra suburban fare in advance — riding without a valid ticket risks a fine.

From Budapest, take HÉV suburban railway line H8 from Örs vezér tere (metro M2) about 45 minutes to the 'Gödöllő, Szabadság tér' stop, right beside the palace. It is generally open daily 10:00–18:00 in the high season (Apr–Oct) with shorter winter hours; the combined permanent + temporary exhibition ticket runs roughly HUF 7,500–8,100 for adults, but always confirm current prices, hours and open areas on the official website.
