Godaido is a small detached hall of Zuiganji Temple, set on a tiny island in Matsushima Bay — one of the celebrated Three Views of Japan (Nihon Sankei) in Miyagi Prefecture. The present hall was rebuilt in 1604 by the feudal lord Date Masamune and is the oldest surviving Momoyama-period building in the Tohoku region, designated a National Important Cultural Property. Visitors reach the island by crossing the vermilion 'sukashibashi' bridges, which open onto sweeping views of Matsushima Bay.

SafetyThe sukashibashi has a slatted floor with open gaps and the sea visible below. Take care if you fear heights, and hold hands with small children as you cross.
SafetyReaching the island requires steps and the bridge, so it is not wheelchair accessible. Those with limited mobility may prefer to view from the shore or consider the larger sightseeing boats (check latest).
SeasonIn winter the bridge and steps can freeze and become slippery — bring warm clothing and non-slip footwear.
MannersThis is an active place of worship. Keep quiet on the bridge and grounds, and avoid casual photography of the hall's sacred interior.
RulesAdmission is free, but the bridge gate closes toward evening and you cannot walk across after hours — access is roughly 8:00–17:00, so plan your timing (confirm current hours).

About a 7–8 minute walk from JR Senseki Line Matsushima-Kaigan Station. Free to visit (Zuiganji's main hall charges a separate fee). Allow roughly 20–30 minutes. The Matsushima sightseeing-boat pier is right next door, so it pairs easily with Zuiganji and a bay cruise. Confirm fees and opening hours before your visit.
