Gili Trawangan is the largest and liveliest of the three Gili Islands off northwest Lombok, Indonesia, known for clear water, coral reefs and easy encounters with sea turtles. There are no cars or motorbikes on the island, so you get around only on foot, by bicycle or by traditional pony cart (cidomo). SafetyTidal changes can create strong currents around the island, especially in the channel between islands. Don't swim alone and never try to swim across to a neighboring island. The west side is generally safer to swim at high tide
RulesIndonesia enforces drug laws extremely harshly. Magic mushrooms and other drugs offered on the beach or in some cafes are illegal, often fake or laced, and possession alone can bring many years in prison or worse. Do not touch them
SafetyDrink spiking has been reported at parties and clubs. Watch your drink being made, don't leave it unattended, and don't accept drinks from strangers
CautionThe most common crime is theft of bicycles and belongings, especially at night. Lock your bike and avoid quiet beaches and lanes after dark. Cidomo (pony cart) and boat fares are often not fixed, so agree the price before you get on and carry small change
MannersMost residents are Muslim. Dress modestly around the village, mosque and town rather than only in beachwear, and expect the amplified early-morning call to prayer (often around 7am) to be loud
SeasonThe dry season (roughly May to September) offers the calmest seas and best underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving. In the wet season (roughly November to April), showers and rougher seas can delay or cancel boats
SafetyFreediving — Deep line sessions require a lanyard, a rigged counterballast and a trained safety diver in the water. Never make a deep dive alone, under any circumstances. Most freediving fatalities involve a diver with no buddy, or a buddy whose attention lapsed at the wrong moment.
SafetyFreediving — Shallow water blackout and loss of motor control give little or no warning. The last 10m of the ascent and the first 30 seconds on the surface are the highest-risk window. Hold to one-up-one-down and keep eyes on your partner for at least 30 seconds after every dive. 'That felt fine, one more' is the reasoning behind a large share of accidents.
SafetyFreediving — There is no hyperbaric chamber on any of the three Gili islands. A serious incident means evacuation by boat or helicopter to Mataram on Lombok (RSUD Kota Mataram) or on to Bali, which can take hours depending on weather and time of day. Carry insurance that explicitly covers freediving and emergency evacuation, and check your centre's emergency plan on day one.
SafetyFreediving — Outer sites such as Deep Turbo pick up noticeable current around tidal changes, and a thermocline can drop temperature and visibility sharply at depth. Boat traffic is heavy around the island, so never set a line without a marked buoy and dive flag, and keep watching for vessels while resting on the surface.
RulesFreediving — Deep line access and advanced courses normally require certification, logged experience and a health questionnaire. Anyone with cardiac, respiratory or ENT conditions, or a history of pneumothorax or recent surgery, should get medical clearance in advance. Entry requirements and paperwork differ by centre — confirm directly when booking, and treat published prices and opening hours as subject to change.

Most visitors arrive by fast boat from Bali (e.g. Sanur, Padang Bai); journey time and price vary by departure point, so confirm current details when booking. Local boats also run from Bangsal harbour on Lombok. On-island facilities are limited, so bring enough cash (rupiah) and manage sun and hydration.
