Gili Meno is the quietest of the three Gili islands off Lombok, and its shallow, calm water and resident green turtles make it a favourite for beginner snorkellers and families. The star attraction is The Nest, an underwater sculpture by Jason deCaires Taylor: 48 life-size human figures arranged in a circle at about 4 m depth, roughly 100 m from the beach and reachable by snorkelling straight from shore, no boat required. The figures have grown into a living artificial reef, joining the turtles and coral gardens as things to see. As of 2026 access is still free straight off the sandy beach with no entrance fee, but the site's fame means more snorkellers and tour boats, so an early-morning visit is best.

SafetyCurrents run through the channels between the islands; usually gentle, they can strengthen on any given day and quickly pull a snorkeller into deeper or open water. Stay near shore, never snorkel alone, and carry an orange surface float (buoy).
SafetyBoats and snorkel-tour traffic cross frequently between the three islands. Wear a bright rash guard and tow a surface float so boats can see you, and check for boats whenever you surface or move.
SafetyThe Nest sits at ~4 m and ~100 m from shore, so beginners tire fast on the round-trip swim. If your mask fogs or panic sets in, don't push it—rest on your float, treat your mask for fog before you go, and always go with a buddy.
SafetyAt low tide sharp coral and rock get exposed and cut feet, and fire coral, sea urchins and jellyfish can sting or spike on the lightest contact. Wear a rash guard, never stand on or brace against the reef, and touch nothing.
RulesUse reef-safe sunscreen, and do not stand on or touch the coral or the sculptures—they are a living reef. There is no entrance fee, but treat the area as a protected marine zone.
MannersKeep at least 2–3 m from turtles and never chase, touch or feed them. Don't block their path when they rise to the surface to breathe.
SeasonThe dry season (May–October) is best, with water around 27–29 °C. The December–March rainy season brings reduced visibility and stronger waves. Within the day, early morning (roughly 7–9 AM) is calmest and clearest; midday brings stronger currents and a higher sunburn risk.
Practical info
Reach the Gilis by fast boat from Bali (Padangbai, Serangan) or Lombok (Bangsal), then hop between islands by local boat; The Nest can be reached on a swim straight from the beach or via a three-island snorkel tour. Shore entry is free and gear rental is available, but boat and tour prices, schedules and tide timing vary by season and operator—confirm the latest before you go, and agree stops and price with any tour up front.
