Genting Highlands is a hilltop resort at about 1,800m on Mount Ulu Kali in Pahang state, roughly an hour (58km) from Kuala Lumpur. Centered on Resorts World Genting, it holds Malaysia's only legal casino alongside indoor and outdoor theme parks, large malls and hotels, earning it the nickname 'City of Entertainment' in the clouds. Its cool, often misty climate makes it a popular escape from the lowland heat.
Awana SkyWay cable car - a roughly 10-minute glide over rainforest and clouds, with an optional glass-floor gondola
Genting SkyWorlds (outdoor theme park) - a movie-themed park with multiple worlds; generally closed Tuesdays (except holidays/school breaks)
Skytropolis Funland (indoor theme park) - 20-plus rides you can enjoy rain or shine, a good wet-weather backup
Chin Swee Caves Temple - a free Chinese temple in the hills with the 'Journey to Enlightenment' walkway and mountain views
SkyAvenue mall and Genting Premium Outlets - dining, shopping and SkyCasino all clustered together
Good to know
SeasonAt high altitude it is cool and frequently foggy/rainy (about 22°C by day, 12°C at night). Bring layers, long pants and a waterproof jacket or umbrella. The wet season (roughly October–February) is colder and rainier.
RulesThe casino admits guests aged 21 and over only, and Malaysian Muslims are barred by federal law. Bring a photo ID (e.g. passport); large bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers before entry.
MannersCasino dress code is smart casual (collared shirts, etc.). Shorts, ripped jeans, tank tops and slippers may be refused; sleeveless tops are not allowed for men.
CautionAround KL airport and city, avoid touts offering fixed-price rides inside terminals and taxis that won't use the meter, as tourists are often overcharged. Use official taxi coupons, the Grab app, or the Genting Express bus instead.
MannersChin Swee Caves Temple is a place of worship, so keep quiet and dress modestly. Cave paths and steps get slippery when wet, so watch your footing.
SafetyThick mountain fog can sharply reduce visibility, and cable car service may be delayed or suspended in strong wind or bad weather, so allow buffer time in your plans.
Practical info
From Kuala Lumpur, take the Genting Express bus or a Grab to the Awana terminal, then ride the Awana SkyWay cable car to the top. Fares, opening hours and theme-park closure days change, so confirm the latest details on the official site/app. Booking popular rides online in advance is recommended.
