Gaomei Wetlands is a vast tidal mudflat on the coast of Taichung, central Taiwan, celebrated as one of the world's most beautiful sunset spots where the sky mirrors on the shallow water. Visitors walk a 691-meter wooden boardwalk over the flats to watch fiddler crabs and mudskippers, with a row of towering coastal wind turbines silhouetted against the glow. The entire area is a designated wildlife refuge and admission is free.

SeasonThe boardwalk closes for roughly 3–4 hours around high tide for safety — typically shutting ~1.5 hours before high tide (2 hours before spring tides) and reopening ~1.5 hours after. Always check the day's tide table before you go.
RulesThe whole area is a wildlife refuge. Entering core/buffer zones or collecting or harming wildlife can bring fines of NT$50,000–250,000 (higher for protected species) under the Wildlife Conservation Act.
RulesYou may not step off the boardwalk into the water along its length, and swimming, snorkeling and water-recreation equipment are prohibited. Wading is allowed only in the sustainable-use zone at the boardwalk's end.
SafetyFrom December to March a cold, strong coastal wind blows constantly, and the boardwalk may be temporarily closed in high winds. Dress warm and wind-proof, and avoid entering the mudflat or sandbar after dark.
SafetyThe mud is slippery and may hide shells or debris. Wear easy-to-clean shoes or water shoes rather than going barefoot, and bring a plastic bag for muddy or wet items.
SeasonWeekends and sunset hours draw large crowds, straining parking and buses. Arrive early and confirm your return transport (last bus) in advance.
Practical info
Free admission. The wetland area is open 24/7; the Visitor Center is open daily 09:00–18:00. The wooden boardwalk is generally accessible ~08:00–18:00 but varies with the tides. Bus #309 runs direct from Taichung Station (infrequent); #304/305/307 also serve the area, and it's about a 45-minute drive from the city center. Public and private parking lots line the embankment. Confirm fees, hours, tides and boardwalk status on the official site before visiting.
