The Gaocheng (Dengfeng) Observatory in Gaocheng Town near Dengfeng, Henan, is China's oldest surviving astronomical observatory, built in 1276 by the Yuan-dynasty astronomer Guo Shoujing under Kublai Khan. Observations made here produced the Shoushi calendar (1281), the most accurate calendar in the world at the time. Together with the Tang-era Zhou Gong Sundial Platform (723 CE), it forms part of the 'Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in the Center of Heaven and Earth,' a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.

RulesThis is a fragile heritage structure. Do not climb on or lean against the walls, and do not step on the stone Sky-Measuring Scale (shigui).
SafetyThe brick stairways on the tower are narrow, steep, and have low railings. They can be slippery when wet or mossy, so take extra care with children and older travelers.
SeasonInland Henan has hot, sunny summers (Jun–Aug) and cold, windy winters. Spring and autumn are best; in summer bring a hat, water, and sun protection as there is little shade on the open platform.
CautionEntry is free, but public transport is very limited and most visitors hire a car/driver. Some drivers or touts may push overpriced combined tours (Shaolin Temple, Zhongyue Temple, etc.); agree the route and price (around 300 RMB/day) in advance and bargain.
MannersAround the adjacent Zhou Gong Temple and shrine areas, keep noise down and be respectful near altars. Tripods and drones may be restricted, so follow on-site signage and staff instructions.
Practical info
Located in Gaocheng Town about 15 km southeast of Dengfeng City (Zhengzhou area), with poor public transport — self-drive, rental car, or a chartered car (about 300 RMB/day) is recommended. Enter via the south gate, where parking is available. Admission is free but you must exchange your ID/passport for a ticket; confirm the latest opening hours (roughly 08:00–18:00), fees, and any reservation rules before you go. It pairs well with Shaolin Temple, Zhongyue Temple, and Songyang Academy as a day trip.
