Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster) is the emblem of Freiburg, the sunny gateway city to Germany's Black Forest. Begun around 1200 and built from Romanesque into Gothic, it is crowned by a 116-metre openwork spire that the art historian Jacob Burckhardt famously called "the most beautiful spire on earth" - and it is the only Gothic church tower within today's German borders completed in the Middle Ages (by 1330). In 2026 it remains a living Roman Catholic cathedral and active place of worship, standing at the heart of Münsterplatz, where a traditional market fills the square on weekday mornings. Entry to the church is free; climbing the tower and visiting the choir and chapel ring carry a small charge.
The 116-metre openwork spire - delicate stone tracery so pierced that you can see the sky through it. Climb 209 steps to the tower keeper's room (Türmerstube), then 56 more to the viewing platform for sweeping Black Forest and old-town views.
14th-15th-century guild windows - the nave's stained glass was donated by the medieval craft guilds, and each window carries the emblem of the bakers, tailors and other trades that paid for it.
Renaissance altarpieces by Hans Baldung Grien and Hans Holbein the Younger, set in the choir and side chapels (separate paid entry).
The playful gargoyles and grotesques along the exterior - waterspouts carved with humour, including the notorious 'mooning' gargoyle that visitors love to hunt for.
The Münstermarkt wrapped around the church - a real working market where you can try the local 'lange Rote' sausage and Black Forest produce, making the square as much a highlight as the building.

RulesThis is an active church, not just a monument. Sightseeing is not permitted during Mass and services, so check the official service schedule before you go.
RulesTower tickets are bought at the tower keeper's room (Türmerstube) after the first 209 steps (cash or card). Tower hours differ from church visiting hours, and the last ascent is about 15 minutes before closing. Always reconfirm the latest prices and hours.
SeasonIn winter the uppermost gallery/platform may be closed due to snow and ice. If visiting December-February, confirm whether the top viewing level is open before climbing.
SafetyThere is no lift - the ascent is a narrow, steep spiral staircase. Skip it if you have knee, heart or vertigo issues, and use the handrail going up and down.
SafetyWatch for pickpockets when the square and market are crowded. Wear bags to the front and keep passport and cards separated.
MannersStay quiet during services, and avoid flash photography and loud conversation. As a house of worship, overly revealing clothing is best avoided.
CautionMarket stalls are largely cash-based, so carry small euro notes and coins. Check posted prices at tourist-facing stalls; tipping is not obligatory in Germany, and rounding up is enough.
Practical info
From Freiburg Hauptbahnhof, take a tram (lines 1/3/5 etc.) to Bertoldsbrunnen and walk 3-5 minutes, or walk about 15 minutes from the station into the old town. Entry to the church is free; the tower climb and choir/chapel ring are ticketed (adult tower ticket around €5). The market does not run on Sundays, so reconfirm opening hours, prices and service times on the official site before visiting.
