Overview

The Dresden Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) is a Baroque Protestant church built in 1726-1743 to a design by George Bähr, famous for its massive stone dome known as the 'Stone Bell' (Steinerne Glocke). It burned and collapsed two days after the February 1945 firebombing of Dresden and was left in ruins for about 45 years during the East German era as an anti-war memorial. After reunification it was rebuilt largely from private donations between 1994 and 2005 and reconsecrated on 30 October 2005; roughly 3,800 salvaged, fire-blackened original stones were fitted back alongside new sandstone, so the mottled facade still tells the story of destruction and reconciliation. As of 2026 it is fully operational as the landmark of Neumarkt square and remains a living church hosting services and concerts, free to visit.

Practical info

It sits on Neumarkt in the Old Town, a short walk from the Altmarkt stop (trams 1, 2, 4) or Pirnaischer Platz (trams 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12), about 20 minutes on foot from the main station and also reachable via the S-Bahn at Dresden Mitte. The main church is free (donations welcome); the dome ascent is a separate paid ticket at entrance G, and because opening hours and prices vary by season and events, confirm the latest details on the official website.
