Overview
Foz do Douro is a former fishing quarter about 5 km from central Porto, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic; today it is a fashionable seaside district of promenades, beaches and stylish seafood cafés. Its icon is the Farolim de Felgueiras, a roughly 10 m hexagonal granite lighthouse built in 1886 that stands out on a breakwater (molhe). It is famous for the dramatic Atlantic swells that crash over the pier and, together with the nearby Pérgola da Foz, ranks among Porto's best sunset spots.

SafetyThe main danger is the waves: swells can surge over the breakwater without warning and sweep people out to sea. On rough days never walk out onto the pier or the lighthouse causeway — stay behind the barriers and safety lines.
SafetyThe breakwater stones and pavement get extremely slippery when wet or covered in algae. If any water is washing over, keep well back from the lighthouse and keep children and pets away from the water's edge.
SeasonAutumn and winter (roughly Oct–Mar) bring the biggest, most photogenic — and most dangerous — swells. Even in summer the Atlantic is cold and rip currents are possible, so swim only at designated, supervised beaches.
SafetySunset is the highlight, but the pier and beach have little lighting; footing becomes hazardous after dark. Head back to the well-lit promenade before nightfall once you've taken your photos.
CautionWatch for pickpockets on the crowded weekend/sunset promenade and on the tram and buses. Keep bags in front while you shoot, and never set your phone or gear down on the breakwater.
MannersFoz is a residential, upscale dining area — weekend reservations at popular restaurants are effectively essential, and on the narrow promenade avoid blocking the path with tripods or straying onto private gardens (confirm prices and opening hours locally).
Practical info
From Porto's Ribeira district, historic Tram Line 1 (Linha 1) runs along the river to the Passeio Alegre terminus in about 20 minutes for roughly €3 one way (verify latest). Bus 500 is a cheaper alternative, and there is no entry fee. Arriving in the late afternoon to walk the promenade and catch sunset at the Pérgola works well.
