Fisherman's Wharf is San Francisco's best-known waterfront district on the city's northern shore, born as a fishing harbor for Italian immigrant fishermen and now a lively stretch of seafood restaurants, souvenir shops and pier attractions. It is especially famous for the wild sea lions at Pier 39, Boudin Bakery's clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl, and as the gateway to Alcatraz Island. As of 2026 it remains a busy, easy-to-reach tourist hub served by the cable car turntables and the historic F-line streetcar, best enjoyed as a half-day of strolling and eating along the bay.

SeasonEven in July, San Francisco's coast is cool with heavy fog and strong sea wind. A t-shirt alone will be cold — dress in layers and bring a windproof jacket.
SeasonMany of the Pier 39 sea lions migrate south to breed in June–July, so numbers can be much lower than usual. If the sea lions are your main goal, fall and winter bring the largest groups.
SafetyAs a crowded tourist spot, pickpocketing occurs. Wear bags in front and keep wallets and phones out of back pockets.
SafetyVehicle smash-and-grab break-ins are common in San Francisco. If you have a rental car, never leave any bag or electronics visible inside it.
CautionSome restaurants add an automatic gratuity or service charge to the bill — check the itemized total so you don't tip twice. You are also under no obligation to pay street performers or spontaneous photo-takers who demand a tip.
RulesAlcatraz Island can only be reached by the official ferry (Alcatraz City Cruises) departing from Pier 33, and it often sells out 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season. Book in advance on the official site.
MannersTipping is customary in the U.S.; restaurants are typically tipped 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. Also, do not feed or approach the sea lions or other wildlife.
Practical info
The Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable car lines and the historic F-Market & Wharves streetcar run to the wharf, and Muni or BART make it easy to reach from downtown. Viewing the sea lions and walking the outdoor piers is free and always open, but the aquarium, museums, submarine, cable cars and the Alcatraz ferry each have their own fares and hours — check the latest prices, times and booking requirements on each official site before you go.
