🇩🇪 Marienberg Fortress

Festung Marienberg · 뷔르츠부르크

Location

Overview

Marienberg Fortress is a hilltop stronghold overlooking Würzburg and the River Main that served as the residence of the city's prince-bishops from about 1250 to 1720. It is prized for a history reaching back to Celtic and Bronze-Age times and for the round St Mary's Church (Marienkirche), one of the oldest church buildings in Germany. As of 2026 a major renovation is under way, so the inner castle and courtyard are closed to individual visitors and reachable only on a guided tour — plan your visit around the outdoor gardens and viewpoints and the Museum für Franken located inside the fortress.
