SafetyThe market gets extremely crowded, so guard against pickpockets and bag tampering. Wear backpacks on your front and check zippers often. Taiwan is generally very safe, but packed night markets call for extra vigilance.
CautionWhen haggling, confirm the final price clearly before paying, as quoted and actual prices can differ. Also note that phone and ATM scams impersonating 'government or bank officials' are reported in Taiwan; decline any stranger's offer to 'help' at an ATM.
MannersQueue politely at popular stalls. Don't cut in line; some vendors have you mark quantities on a clipboard or point to order, so watch the person ahead for about 20 seconds and follow suit.
MannersTrash cans are surprisingly rare. The stall you bought from may take your empties back, but otherwise you might carry a finished cup or skewer for a while, so don't litter.
RulesMost stalls are cash-only (the vast majority of Taiwan night-market vendors take cash only). Carry plenty of small notes (NT$50/100/500); only some larger shops accept EasyCard or LINE Pay. Confirm prices and hours before you go.
SeasonSummer (Jun–Aug) is hot and humid with a chance of showers and typhoons, so bring an umbrella or light rain poncho. Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) are milder and drier, best for strolling.
