Overview
Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse is an 11-metre red-and-white brick tower standing on a small rocky islet in the Beagle Channel, about 9 km (5 nautical miles) east of Ushuaia, and it has guarded the sea route into the city since 1920. Automated, solar-powered and uninhabited, its islet cannot be landed on, yet the lighthouse is the signature highlight of the catamaran tours that leave from Ushuaia's tourist pier. As of 2026 it remains fully operational, with South American sea lions and colonies of seabirds crowding the surrounding rocks. Locals call it the 'Lighthouse at the End of the World,' though the tower that inspired Jules Verne's novel is actually the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse on distant Isla de los Estados.

SeasonThe Beagle Channel is cold and windy even in the southern summer (Dec–Feb); wear a windproof, waterproof jacket over layers, plus a hat and gloves. Winter (Jun–Aug) is much colder and some sailings are reduced.
SafetyChoppy water and strong wind can make the boat pitch, so bring motion-sickness tablets; the open deck is slippery and gusty, so hold the rails when moving around.
RulesYou cannot land on the lighthouse islet — boats only circle it. Landing at the penguin colony (Isla Martillo) is a separate licensed tour (e.g., Piratour), generally available only Oct–Mar.
MannersKeep your distance from sea lions, penguins and birds, never feed them or shout, and carry out all litter — this is a protected area.
CautionBook through the official ticket booths at Ushuaia's tourist pier (Muelle Turístico) or a licensed agency; very cheap street offers may exclude the penguin landing, so confirm the route, duration and whether the port fee is included.
Practical info
Tours depart by catamaran or boat from the Muelle Turístico in central Ushuaia; the basic Beagle Channel circuit runs about 3–4 hours, while the extended version including the penguin island takes 5–6 hours. The lighthouse itself is an unmanned facility closed to the public and can only be viewed from the water, so check the latest sailing times, fares and any port fee before you go.
