Off the coast of Jizan in southern Saudi Arabia lies the Red Sea's largest coral archipelago, including the dive area known as the Farasan Banks. Until Saudi Arabia opened tourist visas in 2019, divers rarely visited, leaving coral and large-fish populations largely intact. The southern Red Sea also carries nutrient-rich currents flowing in from the Gulf of Aden, giving it a higher density of large fish than the northern Red Sea.
