The Cliffs of Étretat are dazzling white chalk cliffs on Normandy's Alabaster Coast (Côte d'Albâtre), famous for three wave-carved arches and a soaring rock needle (l'Aiguille). They inspired Impressionist painters such as Monet and Courbet and set the stage for Maurice Leblanc's novel 'The Hollow Needle' (Arsène Lupin). In 2026 Normandy marks the centenary of Monet's death with the Normandie Impressionniste festival (29 May–27 Sept), and the Jardins d'Étretat take part with site-specific performances and exhibitions. The cliffs themselves are free and open year-round, but visitors must respect strict tide and rockfall safety rules.
Falaise d'Aval: the great arch 'Porte d'Aval' and the limestone needle beside it — Monet's most-painted view. Admire it from the pebble beach at low tide or from the clifftop path.
La Manneporte: the largest arch, hidden just beyond the Porte d'Aval and reached by continuing a little further along the clifftop walk.

Good to know
SafetyTide accidents are common. Many people walking the beach or the sea cave (Trou à l'Homme) get cut off by the incoming tide, so limit beach exploration to roughly two hours either side of low tide and always check the tide table in advance.
SafetyChalk cliffs can collapse without warning. Stay at least 5 m from the edge and behind safety barriers, and hold children's hands. Muddy paths are slippery after rain, so wear sturdy footwear.
RulesSeveral areas — the 'Trou à l'Homme', the tunnels, the 'Chambre des Demoiselles' and walking beneath the cliffs — are strictly prohibited and violations carry a fine (Class 2 offence). Removing the beach pebbles, which protect the cliffs during storms, is also forbidden.
SeasonJuly–August and weekends are extremely crowded with difficult parking. Visit in the quieter months of May–June or September, or come early morning or late evening.
RulesThe Jardins d'Étretat recommend booking online and, being atop the Amont cliff, cannot be reached by car (no parking; take the little tourist train from the village). In 2026 the gardens are closed for maintenance on 7 July and 31 August.
MannersThis is a protected natural site and a living village. Keep to marked paths, avoid drones and loud noise, and carry all litter back out with you.
CautionThe cliffs are a free natural site, so there is no such thing as a 'cliff entry ticket' — anyone selling one is running a scam. The only legitimate paid options are the gardens and boat tours, so book Paris day-trips or parking only through official channels.
Practical info
From Paris take a train from Gare Saint-Lazare to Bréauté-Beuzeville, then transfer to the Nomad 504 bus, or ride to Le Havre and take bus 13 or 509 (SNCF usually sells combined train-plus-bus tickets from about April to early November). The clifftop paths are free and open around the clock, while paid sites such as the gardens and boat tours have hours and prices that change — confirm the latest details on the official websites before you go.
