Enoshima is a small island in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, linked to the mainland by the roughly 400-meter Benten Bridge, making it a hugely popular day trip from Tokyo. Its attractions are scattered across the island: Enoshima Shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, goddess of fortune and the arts; the wave-carved Iwaya Caves; and the Sea Candle observation lighthouse. On clear days you can enjoy sweeping views of Mount Fuji and Sagami Bay.

SafetyThe whole island involves many stairs and slopes, with far more climbing than most expect. Comfortable shoes are essential, and the paid outdoor 'Escar' escalator only goes uphill, so you must walk down the stairs
SafetyBlack kites (tonbi) frequently swoop from behind to snatch food out of visitors' hands, and children are often targeted. Avoid eating while walking; eat inside roofed stalls or cover your food with your hand
SeasonThe Iwaya Caves are open year-round but close for safety during typhoons, high waves and other bad weather. Check the latest operating status before visiting
SeasonRaw shirasu (whitebait) is not served during the closed fishing season from January to mid-March, and is only available on days with a fresh catch. Visiting in winter hoping for raw shirasu may leave you disappointed
RulesExcept for overnight guests, the Enoshima Ohashi vehicle bridge may be closed late at night (roughly 22:00 to 5:00). If you plan to travel at night, check the latest access hours
MannersEnoshima Shrine is an active place of worship for locals. Be respectful in front of the pavilions and take care not to disturb worshippers when taking photos on the grounds
Practical info
The easiest approach is the Odakyu Line (Romancecar or express) from Shinjuku to Fujisawa or the terminus Katase-Enoshima Station, then a short walk onto the island. If visiting several spots, the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass is useful. A combo ticket bundling the Sea Candle, garden, Iwaya Caves and Escar is cheaper than buying separately.
