🇩🇪 Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Festung Ehrenbreitstein · 코블렌츠

Location

Overview

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a vast Prussian stronghold perched on a cliff about 118 metres above the Rhine on the river's right bank at Koblenz, and is often cited as one of the largest surviving fortresses in Europe after Gibraltar. Its present form was built by Prussia between 1817 and 1828, but the site's origins reach back to a castle around the year 1000, and since 2002 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Upper Middle Rhine Valley'. As of 2026 the fortress houses several galleries of the Koblenz State Museum (Landesmuseum) and is reached easily by cable car or a fortress lift, making it one of the most popular excursion destinations in Rhineland-Palatinate. The headline experience is the sweeping view over the 'Deutsches Eck' (German Corner), where the Moselle joins the Rhine.
