Eger Castle (Egri vár) crowns a hill above the baroque old town of Eger in northern Hungary and is best known as the site of the 1552 Siege of Eger, when roughly 2,000 defenders under Captain István Dobó held off an Ottoman army of 35,000–40,000 for 39 days. The victory became a lasting symbol of Hungarian resistance, immortalized in Géza Gárdonyi's 1899 novel Egri csillagok (Eclipse of the Crescent Moon). Today the fortress houses the István Dobó Castle Museum, with a renewed core exhibition, underground casemates and a Gothic bishop's palace. As of 2026 it is fully open and a popular day trip from Budapest.

SafetyA steep cobbled climb leads from town up to the gate, and the underground casemates and rampart paths have uneven footing. Wear sturdy flat shoes and watch your step with children or less-mobile visitors.
RulesPrices and opening hours change by season and by exhibition, and some town venues or certain days (e.g. Mondays) may be closed. Always confirm the latest on the official site egrivar.hu before visiting.
SeasonNovember–March has shorter hours plus cold and possible snow that limit the outdoor ramparts and ruin garden; April–October is most pleasant, and siege commemorations and reenactments take place around 18 October.
MannersHeroes' Hall contains Dobó's tomb and is a national memorial. Keep quiet and avoid flash photography indoors and at the tomb.
CautionAvoid negotiating unmetered taxi fares at the station or sights — use the meter or a ride app. In the nearby Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy) wine cellars, confirm per-glass prices before tasting.

Practical info
Direct trains from Budapest-Keleti reach Eger in about 1h50m (roughly hourly); intercity buses from Stadion/Népliget take about 1h40m and end near the center. The castle is about a 10-minute (uphill) walk from town, or take bus 11/12/14; the gates generally open from early morning to evening while exhibitions follow seasonal hours.
