Dongpirang Mural Village sits on an 'East Cliff' hillside overlooking Tongyeong Harbor, where roughly 130 murals line the winding alleyways. Once slated for demolition, the neighborhood was revived as an open-air art space through a 2007 mural contest, and it remains a place where residents actually live. Climb to the top and the whole of Tongyeong's central market, Gangguan port, and the sea open up before you.

MannersThis is a living residential village. Keep your voice down, don't run through the alleys, and avoid entering or making noise in the early morning or after dark.
MannersDo not photograph into residents' yards, windows, doorways, or laundry, and ask permission before photographing residents. Privacy intrusion here has been a genuine, long-standing complaint.
RulesEnjoy the murals with your eyes only. Do not scribble on, touch, or repaint them; some walls carry hand-painted pleas from residents asking visitors not to deface the art.
SafetyThe alleys and stairs are narrow and steep. Wear non-slip shoes and watch your footing, especially in rain, snow, or after dark.
SeasonThe hill offers little shade in summer heat. Bring water and a hat; spring and autumn, or early morning and late afternoon, give the best light and comfort.
Practical info
Free entry, open year-round (open village, no gate). The Central Traditional Market public parking lot is most convenient; confirm current parking rates at the time of visit. From Tongyeong bus terminal it's about a 5-10 minute taxi ride, or a city bus to the Central Market stop plus a short walk. Verify hours and parking policy before you go.
