🇨🇳 Dazu Rock Carvings (Baodingshan)

大足石刻·宝顶山摩崖造像 · 충칭

Location

Overview

The Dazu Rock Carvings, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, comprise 75 protected sites holding roughly 50,000 statues and more than 100,000 characters of inscriptions, and they represent the last great flowering of Chinese cliff-carving art. Baodingshan is the crown of the group: a U-shaped valley known as Dafowan where the monk Zhao Zhifeng directed some 70 years of work in the Southern Song, producing a continuous carved narrative roughly 500 metres long and up to 15 metres high. Unusually, Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian imagery sits alongside scenes of ordinary Song-dynasty life, which is why the site is often described as a grotto meant to be read rather than merely admired. As of 2026 it operates normally as a national 5A-rated scenic area, with visitors routed through the visitor centre opened in 2022 and shuttled up to the carvings; since it lies well over 100 km west of central Chongqing, plan it as a full day trip.

Practical info

From central Chongqing, take a high-speed train from Shapingba (on metro Line 1) or Chongqing West to Dazu South in about 35-40 minutes, then bus 204 plus the Dazu Rock Carvings tourist shuttle line (over an hour) or a taxi/DiDi of roughly 50 minutes and 80-100 RMB; direct coaches also run from Jiefangbei and Hongqihegou in about 2-2.5 hours. On arrival you check in at the visitor centre and ride a shuttle bus up to the carvings. Opening is generally around 08:30-09:00 with last entry near 16:30, and admission runs roughly 115 RMB in high season and 100 RMB in low season for Baodingshan (about 140/120 RMB for a Baodingshan plus Beishan combination ticket) — but hours, prices and booking rules change seasonally, so verify the latest details on official channels shortly before you go.
