Daecheon Beach is the largest beach on Korea's west (Yellow Sea) coast, in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do, with a gently sloping stretch of clean sand about 3.5 km long and up to 100 m wide. Its sand is notable for being made of finely broken shell fragments, and it has been a resort destination since the 1930s. It is best known internationally as the home of the summer Boryeong Mud Festival.

SeasonAs a west-coast beach it has a large tidal range, so the shoreline and whether you can swim change greatly with the tide. Check the local tide times before you go.
SafetyStrong tidal currents and rip currents can occur when the tide turns. Stay inside the marked safety buoys, follow rip-current advisories, lifeguard instructions and posted swimming hours.
SeasonThe official beach opening period and any night-swimming hours vary each year (2026 opening was announced roughly early July to late August). Confirm the latest notice before visiting.
RulesThe main Mud Festival experience zones may require a paid ticket and have set operating hours (differing on weekdays and weekends) plus a midday break. Verify current prices, hours and booking on the official festival website.
MannersThe Mud Festival involves getting covered in mud. Bring old, disposable clothes, water shoes and goggles, and use the shower facilities before entering shops, vehicles or lodgings so you don't inconvenience others.
SafetyDuring peak season and the festival, expect large crowds and drinking; watch for lost belongings, separated companions, dehydration and sunburn. Bring water and sunscreen and carry minimal valuables.
Practical info
From Seoul, take a KTX or Mugunghwa train to Daecheon Station (about 2.5 hours; the beach is a short ride away) or an express bus to Boryeong Bus Terminal (about 3 hours). The Sky Bike is walk-up only via on-site kiosk and closes Mondays and on major holidays. Book lodging well ahead during peak/festival dates. Confirm fees, hours and opening dates before your visit.
