🇺🇸 Crystal River Manatee (Three Sisters Springs)

Crystal River / Three Sisters Springs · 플로리다 크리스털리버

Location

Overview

Crystal River, on Florida's Gulf coast, is one of the only places in the world where you can legally snorkel alongside wild West Indian manatees. The spring-fed pools of Kings Bay — including the famous Three Sisters Springs — stay at a near-constant 72°F (about 22°C) year round, so when the Gulf turns cold in winter (November–March) hundreds of manatees crowd in to keep warm. The water is shallow (roughly 1–3 m) with clear-day visibility of 5–15 m, making it an easy, surface-based snorkel that even beginners can enjoy while watching these gentle giants. As of 2026 the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service enforces 'Manatee Manners' — passive observation only, no touching — and in-water access is regularly restricted by season and water temperature.

Practical info

The nearest gateway is Orlando International Airport, about a 90-minute drive. Getting inside the springs usually means a boat-access guided snorkel tour, while land viewing is via a shuttle from the Three Sisters Springs Center. Aim for December–February when manatee numbers peak, but always verify current in-water access, seasonal rules, prices and hours with your operator and USFWS notices before you go.
