Overview
Crystal River, on Florida's Gulf coast, is one of the only places in the world where you can legally snorkel alongside wild West Indian manatees. The spring-fed pools of Kings Bay — including the famous Three Sisters Springs — stay at a near-constant 72°F (about 22°C) year round, so when the Gulf turns cold in winter (November–March) hundreds of manatees crowd in to keep warm. The water is shallow (roughly 1–3 m) with clear-day visibility of 5–15 m, making it an easy, surface-based snorkel that even beginners can enjoy while watching these gentle giants. As of 2026 the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service enforces 'Manatee Manners' — passive observation only, no touching — and in-water access is regularly restricted by season and water temperature.

SafetySpring water holds at about 72°F (22°C) year round — cooler than a summer sea. On long early-morning winter tours you can chill quickly, so a 5–7 mm wetsuit is effectively essential.
SafetyKings Bay is a busy boating waterway. When moving between springs, always stay with your guide and dive flag, don't stray from the group, and never enter the water alone.
SafetyBeginners often panic from mask fog or in crowded spots. Keep a float at hand, breathe slowly at the surface, don't overexert yourself, and stay within reach of something to hold.
RulesManatees are protected under federal law (Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act). Chasing, riding, grabbing, poking or feeding them is prohibited — even touching with a hand or foot is an offense that carries fines. Only passive observation is allowed.
MannersDo not stand on or kick the spring bottom — stirring up silt ruins visibility and damages habitat. Never approach a manatee; if one comes to you, hold still and let it move past on its own.
SeasonThe best time is the December–February peak; the official manatee season runs November 15 to March 31. In-water access to Three Sisters Springs can close suddenly when manatees crowd in or when Gulf temperatures drop below about 62.2°F (16.8°C).

The nearest gateway is Orlando International Airport, about a 90-minute drive.
