Overview
Blue Lagoon sits on the tiny island of Comino (Kemmuna), midway between Malta and Gozo, where a white sandy seabed reflects the light into the glowing aquamarine that makes it the Mediterranean's most famous shallow lagoon. The swim zone is only about 2 m deep, and 4–7 m just outside it, so entry is easy and it's a classic pick for beginners and families, with visibility that can top 30 m on a clear day. Sea bream, wrasse and damselfish gather along the rocky edges and seagrass, with the odd parrotfish or seahorse, and more varied terrain continues around the neighbouring Crystal Lagoon and Cominotto (Kemmunett) island. Since 2025 a free advance-booking system and daily caps have eased the crush that once topped 12,000 visitors a day, but July and August are still busy with heavy commercial-boat traffic.

Good to know
SafetyCommercial boats and water taxis pass constantly. Swim only inside the buoyed swimming zone and never cut across the open lagoon. In peak season follow skipper and lifeguard directions and watch the flags (green/yellow/red).
SafetyThe channel between Comino and Cominotto can carry a current that pushes you toward open sea. Beginners should stay well inside the buoys, avoid snorkelling alone, and use a buddy and a tow float.
SafetyThe rocky entry points are slippery and there is no natural shade at all. Wear water shoes, enter carefully, and guard against sunburn and dehydration with sunscreen, water and a hat; early morning is best.
SeasonFrom July to September the mauve stinger jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) can drift near the surface in swarms and gives a burning sting. Wear a rash guard and don't touch even dead ones or detached tentacles.
RulesComino is a Natura 2000 marine protected area. Land entry requires a free advance Blue Lagoon Visitor Pass with a timed slot, QR code and wristband; use reef-safe sunscreen, and flying a drone without a permit is prohibited.
MannersDon't stand on the seagrass or rocks even where it's shallow, and avoid kicking the bottom with hands or fins. Don't feed the fish and keep your distance from any wildlife.

Reach Comino by ferry or boat from Ċirkewwa (Malta) or Mġarr (Gozo), then continue to the lagoon by boat. Stepping onto land needs a free online Blue Lagoon Visitor Pass (timed slot and QR code), and you swim inside the buoyed zone following skipper and lifeguard directions. Fares, schedules, booking rules and daily caps change each year, so confirm the latest official information before you go.
