Cloud 9 is a reef break near General Luna on Siargao Island, widely regarded as the Philippines' premier surf spot. SafetyThe reef is very shallow and razor-sharp, especially dangerous at low tide. Surf on mid-to-high tide and consider reef booties. Reef cuts can get infected — clean immediately with alcohol/Betadine.
SafetySea urchins (black and spiky) lurk in shallow water and stepping on one causes pain, swelling and possible infection — watch your footing or wear reef booties. Small blue jellyfish ('blue-bubbles') can appear with strong onshore winds and sting/itch.
CautionDrivers at Sayak Airport may quote tourists 500–800 PHP to General Luna when local rates are typically much lower. Always confirm the fare before getting in and compare shared-van and habal-habal options.
CautionSome motorbike rental shops claim pre-existing scratches as new damage on return and demand excessive cash. Photograph/film the bike before riding off and note all marks on the agreement. For island-hopping tours, confirm whether island fees, gear, lunch and fuel surcharges are included.
RulesBeginners must use a Siargao Island Surfing Association (SISA)-accredited instructor, and beginner lessons are restricted at reef breaks like Cloud 9. Non-surfers pay a small environmental fee (about 50 PHP) to enter the boardwalk — verify current rates.
SeasonSurf season is roughly Aug–Nov (swell peaks Sep–Oct), which is also peak typhoon risk (2–4 typhoons a year). For calmer weather and clearer skies choose Apr–Jul; the biggest waves, crowds and prices cluster in high season.
