Ciqikou is a thousand-year-old riverside quarter on the west bank of the Jialing River in Chongqing's Shapingba District, named for the porcelain ('ciqi') kilns and the busy wharf trade that made it rich under the Ming and Qing β locals long called it 'Little Chongqing.' It was among the first streets the State Council designated a China Historic and Cultural Street and holds a national AAAA rating, preserving roughly 390,000 mΒ² of fishbone-pattern lanes and Ming-Qing timber shophouses. A major 2021 expansion opened the pedestrian street, the Back Street (Houjie) district, the river wharf and full night lighting, and as of 2026 entry to the town remains free. Come expecting a dense, lively street-food and lantern-lit-evening experience rather than a quiet heritage village β the main lane is heavily commercialised and crowded.
Baolun Temple (ε―ΆθΌͺε―Ί) β the town's oldest core monument, a Ming-era timber hall said to have been built without nails, and linked by tradition to the exiled Jianwen Emperor.
Ciqikou Back Street (η£ε¨ε£εΎθ‘) β the 2021 expansion zone, now a cluster of cultural and museum venues and Chongqing's largest hanfu rental, photography and retail street.
The Jialing River wharf and the diaojiaolou (stilt-house) square β where the river meets Chongqing's signature cliffside terrain; best from late afternoon into the evening light-up.
The 'three treasures' and the snack lanes β maoxuewang (spicy blood-curd hotpot), qianzhangpi tofu skin and salt-pepper peanuts are the local specialities, alongside Chen mahua fried dough twists, suanla fen noodles and sugar-painting stalls.
The lane structure itself β step one alley off the main street and crowd density drops sharply, revealing old stone staircases and streets residents still live on. The newer Shaci Lane and Jinbi Street zones are worth adding on.

SeasonChongqing is in a record heatwave in July 2026. The city issued its first municipal red high-temperature alert on 14 July, with downtown highs of 40β42Β°C (up to 43Β°C in valley areas) across a 40-day 'sanfu' hot period. Ciqikou is full of stairs and slopes with little shade β avoid 10:00β16:00, go early morning or after sunset, carry water and salts, and get indoors immediately if you feel dizzy or nauseous.
RulesPayment is effectively mobile-only. Many stalls will not take cash, so set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you travel: link an international card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB and others are supported) and complete passport identity verification. Small transactions carry no service fee while larger ones do, so splitting big purchases helps. Limits and fee thresholds change often β confirm the current terms in the app.
RulesChina's unilateral visa-free entry covers ordinary passport holders from a long list of countries (including Japan, South Korea and most of Europe) for stays up to 30 days, extended through 24:00 on 31 December 2026; other nationalities, including the US, must still check requirements and apply in advance. CautionDozens of mahua (fried dough twist) shops all claim to be the 'original' or 'time-honoured' brand. A common pattern is a free sample, a push toward a large bag, then weighing by the jin (500g) and quoting far more than expected. Buy from a shop with posted prices, state the weight you want first, and read the final amount on the screen before scanning the QR code. Queues are a better signal than touts.
SafetyDuring Spring Festival, Labour Day and weekend evenings the main street reaches standstill density, and the staircases and slopes create real crush risk. Use a baby carrier rather than a stroller, wear bags to the front, and note that the Back Street area has been criticised even in local government reports for weak wayfinding β download offline maps and agree a meeting point with your group in advance.
RulesExpect a different internet. Google, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, Line and many other foreign services are blocked on mainland networks, and messaging apps can be unstable on local SIMs. International roaming from your home carrier, or a roaming-based eSIM that routes traffic outside the mainland, is the most reliable option. Do not rely on VPNs β unapproved VPN use can breach Chinese law.
MannersBaolun Temple and the other shrines are working religious sites, not just photo stops. Some halls prohibit photography inside, and you should not photograph worshippers head-on while they are burning incense or praying. If you rent hanfu for a photoshoot, don't block narrow lanes for long stretches, and avoid pointing cameras into homes on the residential side alleys.
Practical info
Take Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 to Ciqikou station; the main gateway arch is a 3β10 minute walk, and city buses including routes 202, 220, 237 and 503 also stop nearby. The town is an open, unwalled street district with no entry ticket or advance booking and is accessible around the clock, though shops generally trade from roughly 09:00β11:00 until about 21:00; individual paid sites such as Baolun Temple and the Zhong Family Courtyard charge separately, in the region of 10β20 RMB. Prices, hours and any booking rules change frequently, so verify the latest information immediately before your visit.
