Chongqing Zoo, built in 1953 and opened to the public in 1955, is a 45-hectare urban zoo in Yangjiaping, Jiulongpo District, home to more than 230 species and over 4,000 animals. Its main draw is a group of 23 giant pandas, making it the Chinese city zoo with the largest captive panda population. Renovations finished through 2025: the panda house upper hall reopened on 19 October 2025 and pandas moved into the refurbished lower hall on 22 December 2025, with better indoor ventilation and more naturalistic outdoor yards, while a cub born to mother Liangyue on 12 July 2025 made its public debut at 100 days old on 20 October 2025. It offers close-up panda viewing with far smaller crowds than the Chengdu panda bases, making it an easy half-day addition to a Chongqing itinerary.
The Panda House (upper and lower halls) — visitors move between two buildings; pandas stay in air-conditioned indoor dens during hot months and use the outdoor yards in cooler weather.
The 2025-born cub — Liangyue's cub, born 12 July 2025 at 188 grams, joined the display after its 100-day debut. Whether it is on view depends on its condition that day.
Peak activity windows — pandas are most active roughly 08:30-10:00 in the morning and again around 15:00, aligned with feeding and keeper routines.
The Tiger Hill section — South China tigers and Bengal white tigers, including subspecies rarely seen outside China.
Specialist exhibits — the open-design bird garden, the amphibian and reptile house, and the goldfish hall round out the route beyond the pandas.
The journey itself — Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 is a straddle-type monorail that weaves between buildings and hillsides, so getting there is part of the sightseeing.

RulesCheck your entry status before booking. Many nationalities, including South Korean passport holders, currently have 30-day visa-free entry for tourism or transit, extended through 31 December 2026, but this excludes work, study and journalism. Online ticketing in China is real-name, so you need passport details to book, and you must carry your passport for entry checks and hotel registration. Rules change, so reconfirm before departure.
RulesMainland China runs on mobile payment. Before you travel, link an international Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay and complete passport-based verification. Zoo tickets are sold through the official WeChat mini-program (重庆动物园) and OTAs such as Ctrip, Meituan and Qunar. Carry some small-denomination yuan cash as backup, and confirm current card fees and transaction limits before you rely on them.
RulesGoogle, most Western social apps and many messengers are blocked in mainland China. International roaming from your home carrier usually keeps working, but a local SIM or public Wi-Fi alone may cut off your maps and messaging. Arrange roaming or an international eSIM in advance and download offline maps before arrival.
SeasonChongqing is one of China's 'furnace' cities. July and August routinely top 40C with red-level heat alerts; in August 2025 the zoo limited panda viewing to before 10:00 or suspended it entirely during extreme heat. In summer, arrive at opening and aim for the 08:00-10:00 window, and bring water, a hat and sun protection.
SafetyThe grounds cover 45 hectares on hilly terrain with plenty of climbs and descents. Seeing everything takes four to six hours on foot, so wear proper shoes; visitors with small children or elderly companions should shorten the route around the panda house. Expect long queues at the panda house on weekends and Chinese school holidays.
MannersKeep your voice down inside the panda house. Flash photography, tapping on the glass and feeding the animals are all prohibited, and shouting to get an animal's attention or throwing objects will get you stopped by staff. Pandas sleep for much of the day, so a napping panda is the normal outcome, not a bad visit.
CautionIgnore touts near the metro station and main gate offering taxis, unofficial guide services or to 'buy your ticket for you' at a markup. Official admission is only about CNY 25 in high season and CNY 20 in December, so any much higher offer is a red flag. Use the metro or an app-based ride service such as Didi instead of street-hailed cars.
Practical info
Take Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 to Zoo Station (Dongwuyuan), Exit 1, which connects directly to East Gate 2; driving is not recommended because parking is very limited. The zoo opens around 08:00 with last admission near 16:30 (published closing times vary between 17:30 and 18:00), and admission runs roughly CNY 25 for adults in high season (January-November), CNY 12.5 concession, and CNY 20 in the December low season, with the panda house included in general admission. Always reconfirm prices, hours, closures and any suspension of panda viewing on the official website or WeChat mini-program before you go.
