Checkpoint Charlie was the best-known crossing point between the American and Soviet sectors of divided Cold War Berlin, and the spot where US and Soviet tanks faced off in October 1961. Today, at the corner of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße, you can freely view a white replica guardhouse and the famous sign reading 'You are leaving the American Sector.' As of 2026 the intersection is busy and heavily commercialised, but the City of Berlin has bought back the surrounding plots and is running a Europe-wide design competition from April to October 2026, ahead of turning the area into an education and memorial site curated by the Berlin Wall Foundation. Come here less for a finished museum and more to read the traces of the Cold War amid an area in transition.

CautionPeople in US or Soviet uniforms who offer to pose for photos and then demand cash were banned in 2019, but costumed characters can still appear. Don't give in to demands for a 'tip' after a photo - just walk away.
SafetyThis is a crowded tourist magnet with narrow, congested pavements, ideal for pickpockets. Wear your bag in front and keep your phone and wallet out of outer pockets.
RulesThe outdoor checkpoint and open-air panels are free, but the indoor Mauermuseum, asisi Panorama and BlackBox charge admission. Prices and hours may change during the redevelopment, so check each venue's official website for the latest before you go.
MannersThis is a historic site commemorating people who died at the Wall and during escape attempts. Keep overly playful poses and loud behaviour to a minimum in front of the guardhouse and take it in respectfully.
SeasonIn winter (Dec-Feb) Berlin gets dark around 4 pm and turns cold and damp, so bring warm, waterproof clothing. As the site is largely open-air with little shade, in the summer peak season carry water and a hat.
SafetyThe checkpoint sits right beside a live traffic intersection, so don't step into the road while absorbed in taking photos. Surrounding shops charge tourist-area prices, so check rates before using currency-exchange counters or buying souvenirs.
Practical info
It is a one-minute walk from U6 Kochstraße/Checkpoint Charlie station, or about five minutes from U2/U6 Stadtmitte, and the outdoor checkpoint is open 24 hours and free.
