Chaweng Beach is the most developed and popular stretch on Koh Samui's east coast, running roughly 6–7 km of fine white sand and shallow, clear water. It packs in everything from luxury resorts to budget bungalows, plus restaurants, bars, massage shops and stores, making it a laid-back swimming and sunbathing spot by day and the island's main nightlife hub after dark. CautionThe jet ski rental scam is especially reported at Chaweng: operators point to old scratches as 'new damage' on return and demand tens of thousands of baht. Film and photograph the craft thoroughly before renting and use reputable, well-reviewed operators.
CautionTaxis and songthaews may refuse the meter, quote an inflated flat rate, or take long detours. Insist on the meter, or use the Grab app for fixed, transparent fares.
SafetyBecause it faces east, Chaweng bears the brunt of the northeast monsoon (roughly Oct–Dec, especially Nov to year-end), when waves can reach 2–3 m, rip currents form and red flags fly. Don't swim under a red flag; consider heading to the calmer west coast (Lipa Noi, Nathon) instead.
RulesE-cigarettes/vapes are illegal to possess or use in Thailand, with heavy fines (tens of thousands of baht) and possible detention—do not bring them. Smoking is also banned on many tourist beaches and can incur large fines (verify current rules before you go).
MannersDon't wander into town, shops or restaurants in swimwear—cover up with a sarong or shirt when leaving the beach. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required when visiting temples.

Chaweng is a free public beach with several access points, including near Chaweng Walking Street. Beach umbrellas and loungers belong to nearby restaurants or vendors, so find the attendant and confirm the fee before using them. High season with the best weather is December–March; April–June is quieter and cheaper. Verify fees, hours and regulations before visiting.
