Carl Larsson House (locally Lilla Hyttnäs) is the former home and museum of painter Carl Larsson and his wife, textile and furniture designer Karin Larsson, in the village of Sundborn near Falun in Sweden's Dalarna region. From 1889 the couple transformed a small 1837 timber cottage into a light, colourful home of simple furniture and bold textiles, made world-famous by Carl's watercolour books beginning with 'A Home' (Ett hem, 1899). Widely regarded as the blueprint for the modern 'Swedish style' interior, the house was added to Sweden's official cultural canon in September 2025. It makes a lovely half-day outing combining the interiors and garden — note that the house itself can only be seen on a guided tour.

RulesThe home interior can only be visited on a 45–50 minute guided tour; there is no self-guided entry. In the May–September high season slots fill fast, so pre-book on the official website.
RulesIn summer (May 1–Sep 30) tours run daily 10:00–17:00; off-season (Oct 1–Apr 30) there is usually just one tour a day (weekdays 11:00, weekends 13:00). Confirm current English-tour times before you go.
MannersThis is a preserved historic home with original objects, so do not touch the furniture or textiles and stay with your guide. Interior photography may be restricted — follow the on-site instructions.
SeasonThe garden peaks from May to September; off-season only the house tour is really worthwhile. Dalarna summers have very long daylight (near-white nights), ideal for evening strolls, while winters are cold and snowy — dress warmly.
CautionSweden is almost entirely cashless, so bring a credit/debit card. Buy tickets through the official site (carllarsson.se) and avoid third-party resellers that add fees. Tipping is not customary in Sweden.
SafetySundborn is a rural village about 15 km from Falun with limited public transport. If you take the bus (Dalatrafik route 237), check the last return departure in advance, and drive carefully on the narrow country roads if renting a car.

The house is about 15 km from Falun; Dalatrafik bus route 237 runs from Falu Resecentrum to Sundborn, and by car you follow the 'Sundborn / Carl Larsson-gården' signs (high-season parking is at the village entrance, about a 10-minute walk away). Entry is by guided tour only — daily 10:00–17:00 in high season and one tour a day off-season — with prices around SEK 265 adult, SEK 215 student/senior and SEK 75 for ages 6–16; always check the official site for the latest times and fares.
