Location

Overview

The Cité de Carcassonne, in the Aude department of Occitania, is Europe's largest walled medieval city, ringed by a double line of ramparts and 52 towers along roughly 3 km of walls, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Its fairy-tale silhouette owes much to the sweeping 19th-century restoration by architect Viollet-le-Duc; at its heart, the Château Comtal and the rampart walkways form the ticketed core. July 2026 is peak season: the Festival de Carcassonne (26 June–31 July 2026) stages concerts in the castle's Cour d'honneur, and on the night of 14 July the 'Embrasement de la Cité' fireworks draw around 700,000 spectators, pushing crowds to their maximum. Wandering the cobbled lanes inside the walls and entering the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire are free, but booking is strongly recommended for the Château Comtal.
