Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente) is the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe, about 6 km northwest of Sagres on Portugal's Algarve coast. A powerful lighthouse built in 1846 crowns roughly 75-metre cliffs, and the cape is famous for its dramatic Atlantic sunsets. Good to know
SafetyThere are no railings or fences at the cliff edge and falls have occurred. Keep well back from the edge, especially when taking photos.
SeasonThe cape is extremely windy year-round with sudden strong gusts, and it feels cold even in summer — bring a windproof jacket, and stay away from the cliffs in storms or high winds.
RulesThe lighthouse complex — courtyard, maritime museum, gift shops, café and toilets — is currently closed to the public until further notice; check the latest status (e.g. Visit Sagres) before going. The cape, cliffs and viewpoints remain open 24 hours, free of charge.
SeasonSunset is very popular and crowds peak in summer (especially August). Arrive 30–45 minutes early for a good spot, and linger about 10 minutes after sunset as the sky keeps changing and the lighthouse beam begins to sweep.
MannersThe headland is a protected habitat with endemic plants. Stay on marked paths, don't trample vegetation, and take all litter with you — leave no trace.
CautionSome vendors, including the sausage stall, are cash-only, so carry small euro notes. With facilities closed there may be no toilets or shop at the cape, so bring your own water and snacks.
Practical info
By car it's about 10–15 minutes from Sagres, with free parking near the lighthouse that fills up around sunset. Public transport is the Vamus bus from Sagres, but services are limited and mainly on weekdays, so check the timetable. Confirm fees, hours and any facility openings with up-to-date sources before you visit.
