🇮🇹 Cala Mariolu (Gulf of Orosei)

Cala Mariolu (Ispuligidenie), Golfo di Orosei, Baunei · 이탈리아 사르데냐 오로세이만

Location

Overview

Cala Mariolu sits on the Baunei coast in the southern Gulf of Orosei, on Sardinia's east side, where limestone cliffs rising some 500 metres wrap the cove in a natural amphitheatre. A bed of brilliant white pebbles, locally called 'Ispuligi de nìe' (snowflakes), turns the water an intense turquoise-to-emerald, and visibility of 20–30 metres makes this one of Sardinia's signature snorkelling beaches. Close to shore the water is shallow (roughly 1–8 m) with rock crevices and small sea caves that suit beginners, but it drops off steeply just offshore. Sea bream, gilt-head bream and moray eels are common, grouper turn up occasionally, and Posidonia seagrass meadows shelter plenty of life. As of 2026, summer access is capped and requires advance booking.

Practical info

There is no road to Cala Mariolu: reach it by boat tour from Cala Gonone, Santa Maria Navarrese or Orosei, or on foot via a roughly 6 km / 3-hour round-trip trek from the Golgo plateau near the San Pietro church (experienced hikers only). For summer 2026 an app booking, a visitor/time cap and a small landing ticket apply, and there are almost no facilities on site, so bring your own water and food. Always confirm current fees, hours and booking rules before you go.
