Overview
Byeonsanbando National Park, on the western tip of the Byeonsan Peninsula in Buan, Jeollabuk-do, is Korea's only peninsular national park, blending mountains and sea. Its signature site, Chaeseokgang, is a stretch of coastal cliffs where the Cretaceous-era Gyeokpori Formation, roughly 70 million years old, has been eroded by the sea into stratified layers that look like tens of thousands of stacked books. It was designated Scenic Site No. 13 in 2004 and is a key geosite of the Jeonbuk West Coast National Geopark.

SafetyThe lower rock shelf and sea caves of Chaeseokgang are accessible only at low tide. The incoming tide rises much faster than walking speed, and people are regularly stranded — always check the tide table in advance and plan to be off the rocks at least two hours before high tide.
SafetyThe wet, algae-covered sedimentary rock is extremely slippery. Wear shoes with non-slip soles and do not scramble near cliff edges or the water's edge.
SeasonAvoid the rocks and sea caves during typhoons, strong winds, or high swells; check the marine and weather forecast first. Summer peak season brings crowds and active safety controls.
RulesThis is a protected national park, Scenic Site, and national geopark. Collecting or damaging rocks, fossils, or sediment layers, graffiti, and straying beyond designated areas are prohibited — follow on-site signage and closures.
MannersDo not catch or step on marine life in the tide pools, and carry out all your trash. The sea caves are narrow and dark, so be considerate of other visitors and avoid lingering in large groups.
Practical info
Location: near Gyeokpo Port, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do (approx. 35.62, 126.50). By transit, take a bus to Gyeokpo from Buan Intercity Bus Terminal; by car, use the paid parking lot. The cliffs are generally open without a separate admission fee, but nearby temples and facilities such as Naesosa may charge separately — verify the latest. Confirm current tide times and any access closures on the day via the Korea National Park Service (knps.or.kr) and on-site notices.
