Burano is a small fishing island in the Venetian Lagoon, northeast of central Venice, famous for its rows of houses painted in vivid magenta, turquoise and yellow. Legend says fishermen painted them so they could spot their homes through the lagoon fog, and today the colors are so regulated that owners must get official permission to repaint. It is also a historic heart of handmade needle lace, a craft dating to the 16th century.

CautionMuch 'handmade' lace sold here is actually machine-made or imported (including pieces made in China from Italian thread). Genuine Burano needle lace is rare and expensive — look for a certificate or signature, and be skeptical of flawless, cheap 'handmade' items.
MannersThe colorful houses are private homes with residents inside. Don't photograph through open windows or doorways, ask permission before photographing people, and don't move plants or chairs to stage a shot.

RulesYou must validate your vaporetto ticket at the yellow machine on the pier before boarding. Unvalidated or invalid tickets are subject to fines.
SeasonDay-tripper crowds pour in from about 10:30am until lunch, and high summer is hot and packed. Early morning, late afternoon, and April–June or Sept–Oct are more pleasant. Book popular restaurants (e.g. al Gatto Nero) ahead.
SafetyCentral Venice, the vaporetto and crowded piers are pickpocket hotspots — wear bags in front and split up your valuables.
Practical info
Take vaporetto Line 12 from Fondamente Nove in Venice; the ride takes about 45 minutes. A single ticket is around €10.50 (valid 75 min); multi-day passes exist. The island is small — 2.5–3 hours on foot is enough, more if you linger for lunch. Confirm fares, timetables and rules before you go.
