Overview
Lekuan sits along the southern shore of Bunaken Island in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, where a coral reef flat in about 5m of water simply ends and drops vertically past 100m. For freedivers the appeal is the geometry: a few metres off the reef edge and you already have all the depth you need, so a buoy and a line let you run training and fun sessions from one spot without boating out. Water stays around 27~30°C year-round, thin suits are enough for long sessions, and in the dry season from March to October visibility of 20~35m makes it genuinely easy to keep visual contact with your buddy and safety diver. As of 2026, Bunaken National Marine Park has moved to an all-electronic ticketing system introduced in June 2025, and Manado operators such as Apnea Murex (Murex Resorts) and Bastianos run AIDA courses on a regular schedule.
Lekuan I, II and III — the third section starts as a gentle slope before turning vertical, which is what determines where crews set the line on a given day.
The 5m reef edge falling straight into a 100m-plus wall — depth is immediately available, so sessions repeat without relocating.
A wall carpeted in giant barrel sponges and sea fans — descending alongside structure rather than into empty blue is a rare visual environment in freediving.
Green turtles resting under the overhangs and ledges, most reliably along Lekuan I (observe from a distance, never pursue or touch).
Dry-season blue water at 20~35m visibility — one of the few places where you can genuinely see your buddy and safety diver down the line.
Resort line sessions typically run on a buoy with the line set between 30 and 50m, worked one-up-one-down.
Good to know
SafetyShallow water blackout and LMC cluster in the final 10m of ascent and the first seconds on the surface. Never descend alone, work strict one-up-one-down, and have a safety diver meet you at 10~15m and watch you directly for at least 30 seconds after surfacing. Good visibility is not a substitute for close supervision or a reason to watch from the buoy.
SafetyA vertical wall gives you no bottom reference, so depth perception and even up-down orientation degrade fast. Always use a downline and lanyard, set depth alarms, and only attempt deep dives on a setup with counterballast or an equivalent retrieval plan. Descending on feel alone while tracking the wall, and overshooting the planned depth, is a repeatedly reported freediving accident pattern.
SafetyThe Lekuan wall is riddled with overhangs, ledges and narrow crevices. Entering any overhead environment on a breath-hold means that a blackout leaves you with no direct path to the surface, which turns survivable into fatal. Do not go in for a photo or a closer look at a turtle.
SafetyCurrent can run hard along the wall on some days, and the surface carries steady dive-boat and fishing-boat traffic. Mark your position with a buoy and SMB and agree a pickup point before any drift session — propeller strikes on divers recovering at the surface are a real hazard here. Expect thermoclines that drop temperature abruptly and factor heat loss into session length.
SafetyEmergency medical care on Bunaken Island itself is limited; the recompression chamber and full hospitals are in Manado, a 30~45 minute boat crossing plus a road transfer away. Do not dismiss taravana (freediving decompression sickness) from repeated deep dives, and leave a generous interval between your last session and any flight. Standard travel insurance, and often dedicated dive insurance too, excludes freediving unless declared — read the policy wording before you buy.
RulesBunaken National Marine Park has required electronic tickets purchased in advance since June 2025. Touching or collecting coral and spearfishing are prohibited, as is chasing or handling turtles. Most centres require an AIDA-equivalent certification or enrolment in a course, plus a buddy, before they will run a line session. Fees, purchase channels and prerequisites change, so verify the current position before you travel.
SeasonThe December to February wet season brings rain and swell that cut visibility and make the Manado-Bunaken crossing rough enough to cancel boats. March through October is the more reliable window for both visibility and surface conditions.
Practical info
From Sam Ratulangi International Airport (MDC) it is roughly 30 minutes to the harbour and a 30~45 minute boat ride to Bunaken. Scoot flies direct from Singapore year-round while the Seoul link is a seasonal Eastar Jet route (broadly June to October), so routing via Jakarta or Singapore is the safe default; Korean and Japanese passport holders are eligible for the Indonesian e-VOA. Book line sessions and courses ahead with operators such as Apnea Murex or Bastianos, and confirm flight schedules, park ticket pricing, course fees and certification prerequisites directly before booking, as all of these change frequently.
