🇫🇷 Bonifacio

Bonifacio · 코르시카

Location

Overview

Bonifacio is a medieval town at the southern tip of Corsica, famous for its Genoese citadel and old town (Haute Ville) perched dramatically atop white limestone cliffs that rise about 70 m and stretch some 6 km. Below lie the turquoise waters of the Strait of Bonifacio facing Sardinia, and the nearby Lavezzi archipelago is a nature reserve with some of the clearest water in southern Corsica. As of 2026 the area is tightening measures against summer overtourism, including proposed daily visitor caps for the Lavezzi Islands and vehicle quotas on tracks to remote coves, so June and September to October are far more relaxed than the July to August peak.

Practical info

Bonifacio is about 21 km (25 min) from Figari airport and 27 km from Porto-Vecchio; paid parking near the port fills quickly in peak season, so arrive early or use buses and shuttles. The King of Aragon's Staircase, boat tours and the Bastion de l'Étendard are ticketed and weather-dependent, and the ferry to Sardinia (Santa Teresa di Gallura) runs about 50 minutes on a seasonal schedule, so check current fares, hours and sailing status with the official booking site and tourist office.
