🇲🇺 Blue Bay Marine Park

Blue Bay / Baie Bleue · 모리셔스 남동부 (마에부르)

Location

Overview

Blue Bay Marine Park, near Mahebourg in south-east Mauritius, has been the island's only marine park since 1997 (a Ramsar wetland since 2008, roughly 353 hectares). Its shallow, sheltered lagoon opens straight off the sand, making it one of Mauritius's best shore snorkels for beginners and families. Around 50 coral species and more than 72 reef-fish species live here, and the southern zone holds a massive brain coral thought to be 800-1,000 years old and the largest in the Indian Ocean, sitting at about 4-5 m. Visibility runs 20-30 m and water sits at 23-28°C, with green and hawksbill turtles turning up on calm mornings. Note that recent surveys report roughly 40% coral loss across the park, so keeping fins and hands off the reef matters more than ever.

Practical info

Blue Bay is about a 15-minute drive from SSR International Airport and 10 minutes from Mahebourg, with free beach access and free parking. You can wade straight into the shallow lagoon from the sand, but the protected coral gardens and the ancient brain coral are best reached on licensed guided boat or glass-bottom boat tours departing from Mahebourg and Blue Bay. Prices, timetables and departure conditions vary with the weather, so confirm the latest details with local operators just before you go.
